In an online panel discussion, representatives of a news collective and NGOs will debate ethical image use in the press and in humanitarian aid. Reports on global catastrophes, such as climate change, environmental destruction and human rights violations are a fundamental part of our news coverage. Burning forests, famished people and protests are well-known motifs that demonstrate the severity and urgency of the events. For local Indigenous communities and international NGOs, it is vital that these images create attention to raise support for their cause. Given the importance of visual content, Fotomuseum Winterthur wants to interrogate how these pictures are produced and distributed, and how we can achieve a successful and respectful communication between the people affected by catastrophes and injustice and the onlookers.
Representatives of the Brazilian news collective Mídia Índia and the NGOs Survival International and Society for Threatened Peoples will discuss these topics. They will talk about their aims and strategies, as well as the challenges they face in mediating their situation in local and international contexts.
The event is free, will be held in English and Portuguese with simultaneous interpretation and takes place on Zoom. Details on how to access the talk will be confirmed upon registration.
