In 1946 Duchamp spent a few days with his lover on Lake Geneva and photographed the little waterfall Le Forestay. These photographs form the background of his mysterious image Étant donnés, as Stefan Banz learned almostby chance. In What Duchamp Abandoned for the Waterfall, Caroline Bachmann and Stefan Banz show themajestic views of Lake Geneva that he ignored in favor of the nondescript waterfall. They capture a lake that “wears a new dress every hour” (Duchamp), photographed in the light of different times of day and night.
