Most of Balthasar Burkhard’s installation-like photographs are conceived as archetypes. Bodies, animals, trees, cities, mountains, deserts, and seas are the elementary subjects he depicts in full detail. As early as the late 1960s Burkhard created large-scale photographs in collaboration with Markus Raetz, and at the time they were considered unique in terms of their mood and monumentality. The three-part piece “Chlönthal” is part of a larger series of works about an archaic Swiss natural landscape.
