Gerhard Richter’s work is deeply engaged with both photography and painting. Many of his paintings have family snapshots from private albums or mass media reproductions as their foundation. When a painting is the starting point for a photographic work, as in the case of the series 128 Details from a Picture (Halifax 1978) II, then the information within the photographic image is blurred, turned into allusions, obfuscations, and traces.
