Influenced by Diane Arbus and Walker Evans, Owens began to work as a photographer in the 1960s. Witness to the rise of suburban sprawl, he cast an anthropologically informed and critical eye on these nascent social structures. In several series, such as “Suburbia” (1972), he captured the life of middle-class America and the emergence of new social and cultural values with a touch of wry wit. His recent films continue in this vein.
