In a world designed for speed and productivity, the human being and his physical achievements appear to be in danger of extinction. Salgado is interested in the dying phenomenon of craftsmanship, which seems to be practiced these days almost only in third-world countries. People scramble like ants to perform to the best of their physical ability. But in the wake of globalisation, this way of working is being abandoned, or exiled to places where craftsmanship is less noticed and appreciated. Salgado works like an archaeologist attempting to conserve what is in danger of disappearing.
