With his computer-manipulated works, often based on amateur snapshots or photographs by friends, Jörg Sasse creates situations that undermine the standpoint of the viewer and the certainty of the gaze. We may look at what seems to be a perfectly familiar landscape or building or some slightly out-of-focus scene in motion. And yet the characteristics and patterns that confirm and strengthen our understanding of the image are subtly, almost imperceptibly overturned. Perspectival features turn out to be visual traps or dead ends. We are looking at artificial pixel worlds that toy with representations of reality, omitting something here, adding something there, until a kind of suspension kicks in – destroying any reliable sense of time or space. These are visual worlds with the power of fiction; in their constructed qualities they echo the hybrid appearance of today’s world.
