In den Bars von Boston begann Nan Goldin ihr grosses Projekt The Ballad of Sexual Dependency (Ballade der sexuellen Abhängigkeit). Sie fotografierte sich und ihren Freundeskreis, direkt, intim, in Nahsicht. Sexualität, Beziehungen, Macht, Identität und die Mischung aus Härte und Romantik bestimmten ihr Projekt. Lange fotografierte sie ohne Tageslicht, mit hartem, manchmal blendendem Blitz.
